One down one to go for Georgia Tech.

CBK: Miami vs Florida Southern NOV 15

I’m sticking with my prediction from the beginning year. If Georgia Tech finishes 8-8 in the ACC, they will make the NCAA tournament. Saturday they picked up a 73-68 win over a pesky Boston College team. The game was never really in doubt in my opinion. The Jackets moved to 19-9 (7-7), and the path is obvious, win at Clemson or at home Virginia Tech to get to 8-8.

Iman Shumpert had 24 points in the win, and Derrick Favors had another solid game with 14 points and 5 rebounds. When Shumpert can free himself into scoring position he makes Georgia Tech a much better team. I really would like to see him more at shooting guard and less point guard. I guess Hewitt feels he doesn’t have much option there though. Either play freshman Mfon Udofia there, who seems to have hit a wall, or play Maurice Miller at the point. Miller has played solidly in the backup role recently, but doesn’t have the size Shumpert does, and Hewitt likes big point guards to be his starter. That said, when Shumpert scores 15 points or more a game, Tech will usually win.

Derricks Favors is looking more and more like the player that was a consensus top 5 High School. I think Favors is starting to learn how to stay out of foul trouble, and he runs the floor as well as any big man in the ACC. I’m still not convinced that Georgia Tech is playing its best basketball of the year as Paul Hewitt said recently, but they are still in position to make the NCAA’s. That’s all you can ask for at this point in the year.

What are you going to do Georgia Tech?

Saturday, February 20th, 2010

Georgia Tech lost again on the road. So what else is new? The Jackets have lost two of their last three road games at the buzzer. This time it was Saturday against the Maryland Terrapins on a last second shot, before that it was Miami on a last second shot. The last 5 years there have been 33 losses on the road against 6 wins. That pretty much averages out to 1 ACC road win a year. That’s in a word pathetic. At 18-9 (6-7) Georgia Tech is right on the bubble. They have a solid RPI, it’s in high 20s, low 30s with 8 top 100 RPI wins. That’s a good NCAA resume, but I don’t think the NCAAs will take an ACC team with a 7-9 conference record. Especially, barring a total collapse by Florida State or Clemson, there will be 6 teams in the ACC with at least an 8-8 conference record.

There are no other NCAA candidates. It’s the top 6 in the ACC standings who I think will all make it, and the Yellow Jackets. So the question is what are you going to do Georgia Tech?

All season long we’ve asked similar questions. Has Georgia Tech turned the corner? Are they fading? Can the team find consistency? I’m as confused with this team 27 games into the season as I was before the season started. Talented, but not well coached, they can’t put any significant stretch of good basketball together. They need one now. As I’ve said during the course of this year, Georgia Tech has to get to 8-8 in the ACC to make the NCAAs. That would require Georgia Tech to win 2 of its last 3 games.

They play Boston College next Saturday. I expect a win there. A loss and Paul Hewitt might not what to show back up in Atlanta. Then they’ll go on the road to Clemson. Trevor Booker’s senior day? No it’s not going happen at LittleJohn. The season, the bid, everything will come down to a home game with Virginia Tech. The Hokies have been playing very well recently, and have the kind of guard play with Malcolm Delaney and Jeff Allen that could give Georgia Tech fits.

What could be the difference is the emergence of freshman Derrick Favors. He scored 21 points and had 18 rebounds against Maryland. He had the kind of game that says if he has anything to say about it, Georgia Tech will get that 8th conference win to go dancing.

What if Georgia Tech doesn’t make the NCAA tournament?

Sunday, February 14th, 2010

After Georgia Tech’s most recent loss a 75-62 defeat at the hands of Wake Forest, the Jackets NCAA hopes are in real danger. They now sit 17-8 and 5-6 in the ACC. A below .500 conference record will have Georgia Tech hosting a NIT game. If the Jacket’s finish 7-9 in the ACC, but make a run to the ACC Tournament Finals, they could get consideration, but I wouldn’t hang my hopes on them getting in.

The Jackets had been solidly in on every projected NCAA bracket out there for weeks. They are slipping badly now. If you’re  a Georgia Tech fan, it is time to get to nervous. I mean really nervous. This team is getting worse. The guards Mfon Udofia and Iman Shumpert are struggling to score so much that bench player Maurice Miller was forced to play 27 minutes against Wake Forest. Udofia and Shumpert were a combined 0 for 10 from the field in the Wake Forest game. You just don’t win many games with your guards playing that poorly. Georgia Tech missing the Big Dance for the 3rd consecutive is a real possibility. Then what?

Paul Hewitt has a near comical buyout it is so large. At close to $7 Million dollars, the Jacket Athletic Association might have to take a loan out, but what choice will they have? Since the 2005 season, Hewitt is an unsightly 27-49 in the ACC. That is unbelievable with the talent level that has been on Georgia Tech teams during that time. Mario West, Anthony Morrow, Thaddeus Young, Javaris Crittenton have all spent time on NBA rosters. Gani Lawal and Derrick Favors will play in the NBA before long, and Hewitt just keeps losing and losing. No more excuses, and as I alluded to earlier this year in my article “Should Paul Hewitt be on the Hotseat”, if Georgia Tech doesn’t make the NCAAs, a change needs to be made at the helm.

Georgia Tech’s 2010 football recruiting class.

How did Georgia Tech do on signing day?

Check out the AJC’s article on the Yellow Jacket’s signees and bios.

In general this class is regarded as middle of the pack in the ACC and in the low 40s nationally. Some have called it a little disappointing in light of the Yellow Jacket’s recent ACC title. Upon closer look the class is better than it appears.

First recruiting rankings are generally a combination of stars and number of commits. The Georgia Tech class was short on scholarships, and it would have been even less if not for the 4 early NFL entrees of Morgan, Dwyer, Burnett, and Thomas which freed up 4 spots.

The Jackets got a signing day bonus when Louis Young a 4 star CB switched from Stanford to Georgia Tech. This class is heavy on defense where the Jacket’s had the biggest needs. I would have liked to see a couple of higher profile players on offense though.
